- Founded 1955
- Employees ~ 100
- Customers 900+
Bananar ehf. was founded in 1955 and is the second oldest company within the Hagar group. Bananar is Iceland’s largest importer and distributor of fresh vegetables, fruits, and berries, and also one of the country’s largest import companies overall. In addition, Bananar is the largest purchaser and distributor of domestically grown vegetables and berries in Iceland.
As the company’s name suggests, its early years were dedicated to the import and ripening of bananas. Since then, the company’s focus has evolved, and today Bananar offers a broad and high-quality selection of both Icelandic and imported fruits and vegetables throughout the year. Products are distributed to customers six days a week, including deliveries to Bónus and Hagkaup stores.
Bananar serves approximately 900 customers, including retail stores, restaurants, hotels, healthcare institutions, schools, preschools, cafeterias, and other organizations.
To fulfil its core mission of providing Icelandic consumers with high-quality food and everyday products, efficient logistics, transparency regarding product origin, and quality assurance are of utmost importance. To meet these requirements, Bananar maintains direct business relationships around the world, sourcing products directly from the regions offering the best quality fruits and vegetables at any given time. Products arrive weekly by sea and daily by air, while fresh produce from Icelandic growers is delivered every day.
For many years, sustainability has been a guiding principle for the employees of Bananar, and the company plays an important role in Icelandic society by helping provide the nation with healthy and high-quality products every day.
