- Founded 1955
- Employees ~ 100
- Customers 900+
Bananar ehf. was founded in 1955 and is the second-oldest company within the Hagar group. It is Iceland's largest importer and distributor of fresh vegetables, fruits, and berries, as well as one of the country's largest import companies. Additionally, Bananar is the largest buyer and distributor of locally grown vegetables and berries in Iceland.
As the company name suggests, its early years were dedicated to importing and ripening bananas. Over time, its focus expanded, and today, the company offers a wide variety of both Icelandic and imported fruits and vegetables year-round. Products are distributed six days a week to customers, including Bónus and Hagkaup stores.
Bananar serves approximately 900 customers, including retailers, restaurants, healthcare institutions, schools, preschools, cafeterias, and more.
To fulfill its core mission of providing Icelandic consumers with high-quality food and everyday goods, efficient logistics, product origin transparency, and quality are essential. Bananar maintains direct trade relationships worldwide, sourcing products from countries offering the best quality fruits and vegetables at any given time. Shipments arrive weekly by sea and daily by air, alongside daily deliveries of vegetables from Icelandic producers.
Bananar has long prioritized sustainability in its operations and is nationally significant in ensuring that Icelanders have access to healthy and quality products every day.
